Kyodo Reports Nippon Steel Has Hired Mike Pompeo As An Advisor On A US Steel Transaction

Kyodo Reports Nippon Steel Has Hired Mike Pompeo As An Advisor On A US Steel Transaction
According to a report published on Saturday by the Kyodo news agency, Nippon Steel Corp. has appointed former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo as an advisor about its acquisition of US Steel.

According to a statement released by Nippon Steel, "We look forward to working closely with him to make the United States' economy and security stronger," as reported by Kyodo.

According to the Kyodo article, the fourth-largest steelmaker in the world also praised Pompeo, who was Donald Trump's secretary of state, for being a respected figure in both the Democratic and Republican parties.

There were no comments on the issue available from the Japanese steelmaker.

Despite having obtained all necessary regulatory clearances from outside the US for their proposed $14.9 billion merger, the two steelmakers still have to deal with political backlash and regulatory scrutiny from US authorities.

The United Steelworkers (USW), a major union, has also objected to Nippon Steel due to concerns over job losses.

President Joe Biden and Republican contender Donald Trump have both declared they will veto the agreement.
