Walmart US president and CEO Greg Foran has been appointed as the new chief executive of the airline company Air New Zealand by the company’s board of directors.

Foran, a New Zealand-born, is currently in-charge of about 4500 retail stores United States of the largest retailer of the world along with managing more than one million employees of the company in the country. He was appointed in the current position in August 2014.

The current chief of Air New Zealand, Christopher Luxon, would be replaced by Foran and it is expected that he would assume the role in the airline in the first quarter of 2020. The replacement of Luxon was more than expected after he had confirmed that he would become the candidate for the National party and contest for the controversial seat of Botany.

The new role of Kiwi Greg Foran will see him undertaking a similar role in a completely different industry and will have to adjust from managing almost $500 billion in business at Walmart to management of $5.8 billion in revenue posted by the national airline of New Zealand.

Foran who grew up in Hastings and Hamilton and his son is the Kiwis league international player Kieran Foran and he would be an outstanding leader of the airline, said Air New Zealand Chairman Dame Therese Walsh in a statement.

"We are thrilled to have attracted a world class Kiwi back home," she said. "Greg has an impeccable track record in delivering strong commercial performance, outstanding customer focus and in building teams that can take a business to the next level," she added.

He is thrilled at his now rile, Foran said. "I am an incredibly proud Kiwi and to be given the job of nurturing and building on the legacy of an iconic company that represents the best of our nation at home and around the world really excites me," he said.

In a statement, Walmart US paid tribute to Mr Foran and said: "We will miss Greg and thank him for his leadership. He has made a difference for our customers, associates and shareholders."

"It is bittersweet to leave Walmart, but this incredible opportunity to lead an iconic Kiwi brand was one I could not pass up, and I'm looking forward to this next chapter," Foran said  in the same statement.
