Sinopec Of China Begins The First Carbon Capture And Storage Facility, With Plans For Two More By 2025
Sinopec Corp of China announced on Monday that it has completed the country's largest carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) facility in east China and plans to construct two more plants of comparable size by 2025.

The state-owned oil company is one of the leading companies in China developing pilot CCUS projects as part of the country's goal of reaching peak carbon emissions by 2030.

The new CCUS project, which began construction just over a year ago, involves capturing carbon dioxide produced during the hydrogen-making process at Sinopec's Qilu refinery in eastern Shandong province and injecting it into 73 oil wells in the nearby Shengli oilfield.

Sinopec estimates that over the next 15 years, 10.68 million tonnes of carbon dioxide will be injected into the oilfield, increasing crude oil production by nearly 3 million tonnes.

Currently, trucks transport CO2 from the Qilu refinery to the oilfield, but Sinopec expects to complete a pipeline to move the CO2 by the end of the year, which will be the first of its kind in China.

"While China's CCUS remains at an experimental stage, it's on a par with the levels of global peers, although lagging in some key technological know-how," Sinopec said in a press release.

Sinopec plans to establish a CCUS research and development center by 2025, focusing on developing cutting-edge technologies such as combining CCUS with wind and solar power, CCUS with hydrogen energy, and CCUS with biomass.

Sinopec captured and stored over 1.52 million tonnes of CO2 last year.

It plans to build two more pilot projects in the nearby Huadong and Jiangsu oilfields over the next few years.
