Search For Design Head To Cater To Chinese Market Being Done By Tesla: Reuters
In its efforts to start a “full-function” studio in Shanghai or Beijing and thereby design electric cars that are specifically suited to fulfil Chinese consumer tastes, United States based electric car maker Tesla is searching for a design director in China, claimed a report published by the news agency Reuters.

Based on source information with knowledge of the matter, the report claimed that in the auto industry was being trawled by the human resources managers of Tesla as well as several other head hunters over the past four months.

The company was looking out for “bi-cultural” candidates with 20 or more years of experience on the job and people who were also conversant with the tastes of Chinese consumers, said the report. It added that the suitable candidates should also be able to bridge the gaps between China and the United States in terms of car designing.

The report also claimed that Tesla’s global design chief Franz von Holzhausen has already interviewed some candidates even through the number of candidates approached or interviewed was not available.

There was no comment available from Tesla and von Holzhausen.

According to consultancy LMC Automotive, China is the biggest auto market of the world and is also the largest market for all electric vehicles. It is expected that the sales of vehicles this year would reach a total of 1.5 million units.

China is also the second largest market for tesla after the United States.

The report however also quoted sources saying that Tesla had not yet completely developed its plans for the design studios in China and the company was potentially waiting to get more clarity on how the already strained US-China relations move ahead under the new US president Joe Biden. Sources told Reuters that the electric car maker will decide on the investments for the design studios in China after getting such clarity.

The news of the company making the talent search primarily from the Chinese market was in line with comments made early last year by Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

“I think something that would be super cool would be ... to create a China design and engineering centre to actually design an original car in China for worldwide consumption. I think this would be very exciting,” he said at a media event in Shanghai.

The focus of Musk in manufacturing cars in and for the Chinese market is part of a strategy of the company to increase its global sales volume to more than 500,000 mark, and the company fell short by just 450 of hitting the target in 2020.

According to the Reuters report, Tesla started to look for a China studio director sometime in September last year and the company undertook a series of activities to this effort as recently as December when LinkedIn and other means to approach candidates were used by a number of head hunters on behalf of the company.
