Control of the @POTUS account will be handed over to the Joe Biden administration by Twitter Inc and Facebook Inc on January 20 – the say that he is slated to officially take over as the president of the United States, the two social media companies have said.
The @POTUS account is recognised as the official account of the President of the United States on both the social media platforms. That platform is different from the @realDonaldTrump Twitter account as well as the @DonaldTrump Facebook page that were used by the outgoing US president Donald Trump for posting messages on the social media platforms.
“Twitter is actively preparing to support the transition of White House institutional Twitter accounts on January 20th, 2021. As we did for the presidential transition in 2017, this process is being done in close consultation with the National Archives and Records,” the company confirmed to the media on Saturday.
The other institutional handles on the platforms – including the ones for the White House, vice president and first lady of the United States, will also be transferred by the two social media giants on the day of the inauguration of the new US president Hoe Biden.
“In 2017, we worked with both the Obama Administration and incoming Trump Administration to make sure the transition of their Facebook and Instagram accounts was seamless on January 20th, and we expect to do the same here,” Facebook said in response to a query from the media.
According to a report published earlier by Politico, the process of transferring of the @POTUS Twitter handle from the Trump administration to the Biden administration does not involve any sharing of information between the team of the outgoing President and tghat of the incoming Biden team.
In order to discuss the manner in which the new administration plans to make use of Twitter, officials from the social media company will meet transition officials of Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris prior to the inauguration, according to reports on the issue published earlier.
It has been two weeks that Joe Biden had been elected as the President of the United States and is currently reported to be preparing for the transfer of power on January 20. However the outgoing president Trump has refused to concede defeat and is trying to invalidate or overturn the results of the elections through lawsuits and recounts in a number of states. He claims that there had been widespread voter fraud but has not submitted or made public any proof to support his claims.
