Meta And Qualcomm Have Reached An Agreement On Custom Virtual Reality Chips
Meta Platforms Inc announced an agreement with Qualcomm Inc to produce custom chipsets for its Quest virtual reality devices on Friday at a consumer electronics conference in Berlin.

According to a statement, the companies' engineering and product teams will collaborate to produce the chips, which will be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon platforms.

The agreement demonstrates Meta's ongoing commitment to Qualcomm's technology, even as it attempts to develop custom silicon of its own for the array of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality devices it has planned.

The deal's financial terms were not made public.

The chipsets developed as part of the collaboration will not be exclusive to Meta, but will be optimized specifically for the Quest's system specifications, according to Meta spokesperson Tyler Yee.

According to him, the agreement only applies to virtual reality devices, and Meta will continue to work on developing its own novel silicon solutions.

"There could be situations where we use off-the-shelf silicon or work with industry partners on customizations, while also exploring our own novel silicon solutions. There could also be scenarios where we use both partner and custom solutions in the same product," said Yee.

"It is all about doing what is needed to create the best metaverse experiences possible."

For years, Meta has relied on Qualcomm chips for its virtual reality devices, including its most recent Quest2 headset, which accounts for roughly 90% of the virtual reality hardware market, according to market research firm IDC.

In order to realize Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg's vision for the metaverse, a concept involving an immersive set of digital worlds, the company is also heavily investing in technologies such as pass-through goggles and augmented reality glasses.
