Google Holds 10 Events For Of New Pixel Phones In An Effort To Go Global
Alphabet Inc’s Google us apparently making a global launch for its Pixel smartphone as it organized 10 simultaneous media events throughout the world for the same as the company also launched its first tablet computer and a new Google Home smart speaker. Analysts now expect the company to significantly enhance the global reach for the distribution of range of phone which the company hopes would assume the popularity as Apple’s iPhone.

Most of the smartphones of the world are powered by Google’s free Android software. However, three years ago, the company divested into hardware manufacturing with the intention to creating complete control over the performance of its applications and the revenue they generate just like Apple does.

While the lower priced devices like smart speakers and home routers have been a success for Google, it has found that the higher priced Pixel series of phones are more difficult to sell.

According to research firm Strategy Analytics, during the nine months ended June 30 this year, Google’s Pixel 2 and 2 XL devices accounted for just 1 per cent of the global market for smartphones with about 2.53 million devices shipped. In contrast, in the nine months ended June 30, 2017, the company had shipped 2.4 million of the first Pixel devices.

The fact that Google has been hesitant to expand its distribution network for to the likes of Apple is reflected in the limited adoption of the Pixel phones. Just to put the fact into perspective, the last two versions of the iPhone was launched through events held in more than 50 countries.

One of the major challenges faced by Google has been to grow from a small experiment in to a polished product that is supported by large sales, support and technical networks.

The company has also been plagued with issues of Pixel phones itself as the there were customer complaints of bugs in Pixel 2 that was launched last year as users complained of unwanted noises during calls, a camera app that crashed frequently and an unexpected screen tint.

Following the launch in San Francisco the United States, Australia, Germany and India are among the six countries where Google had initially sold the Pixel 2 and its larger version – the Pixel 2 XL.

Google spokesman Kay Oberbeck said that cities such as New York, London, Paris, Tokyo and Singapore would host this year’s events for the Pixel 3.

Another interesting fact that indicates Google going global intentions with its hardware is the increase of the number of languages for the Google Assistant, the virtual helper feature on the Pixel, from 3 about a year ago to 16 currently.

Data security issues have also plagued a host of tech companies worldwide including Google and its Pixel 3.

In the latest launch, Google also presented the feature of a smart speaker with a display that shows visual responses to voice commands just like in the ones launched by rivals Amazon.com Inc and Facebook Inc.
