According to media sources, Elon Musk is in Beijing to talk about getting Tesla vehicles in China equipped with autonomous driving capabilities.
In order to train its algorithms, Musk intends to send data gathered in China to another country and activate Full Self Driving (FSD) in that nation.
FSD isn't available in China, however it is in other nations like the US.
The announcement followed a US research that linked at least 13 collisions, including one fatality, to Tesla's autonomous driving modes.
According to state media, Mr. Musk stated that Tesla was eager to work closely with China to "achieve more win-win results" at a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
Li responded by telling Musk that the Chinese market will "always be open to foreign-funded firms," as per the reported information.
The second-biggest market for Tesla is China. Other automakers, including Guangzhou-based Xpeng, have started putting comparable self-driving features in their vehicles in an effort to rival Tesla.
Musk called Chinese automakers "the most competitive car companies in the world" on Sunday.
In the past, Tesla has taken action to reassure Chinese authorities regarding the implementation of FSD in the nation. One such action was the establishment of a data centre in Shanghai, which is designed to handle customer data related to China in compliance with local regulations.
The journey takes place a few days after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the United States said that it was looking into whether a recall of Tesla's driver assistance system effectively addressed safety concerns.
The NHTSA stated that drivers involved in the incidents "were not sufficiently engaged," in spite of regulations requiring them to keep their eyes on the road and be ready to take over at any time when autonomous driving was activated. Before a recall that Tesla said would resolve the problem, the regulator carried out its research.
The software in Tesla vehicles is designed to ensure that drivers are paying attention and that the function is only activated under the proper circumstances, such as while travelling on a highway.
Teslas will be able to operate as autonomous "robotaxis" for years to come, according to Musk. He predicted that by 2018, Teslas will have "full autonomy" in 2015. Additionally, he stated in 2019 that the business will have robotaxis operational by the subsequent year.
The CEO of Tesla announced last month that the robotaxi will be unveiled in August.
Musk's detractors charge him of continuously inflating the possibility of fully autonomous driving in order to boost the value of the company's stock, which has declined due to a number of issues, such as the global decline in demand for electric vehicles and competition from less expensive Chinese producers. Musk refutes the charges.
In an effort to increase demand, Tesla has been lowering the cost of its vehicles in China and other nations.
On X, the microblogging site the billionaire controls that was once known as Twitter, Musk recently stated, "Tesla prices must change frequently in order to match production with demand."
Tesla recently revealed that its first three months of this year had a 13% decline in car sales, amounting to $17.3 billion.
Tesla had a 9% decline in overall sales and a dramatic decline in earnings to $1.13 billion from $2.51 billion during the same time previous year.
Its share price has dropped by 32% so far in 2024.
